The First 30 Days: Building Student Connections That Last All Year

A Strategic Guide for School Administrators

The relationships your teachers build in the first month set the tone for the entire school year. When students feel known and understood from day one, you’ll see fewer behavioral issues, higher engagement, and teachers who feel more confident and connected to their work. Student and Teacher Communication

Week 1-2:

“Getting to Know You” Foundation

Teachers: Use Class Catalyst’s customizable prompts to ask students meaningful questions.

Counselors: Review student responses to identify students who may need extra support and gather insights for future conversations. Use these authentic student voices as natural icebreakers during introductions.

Admin: Get a real-time pulse on your school culture. Are students excited? Anxious? What themes are emerging across classrooms?

Elementary (K-5):

“What makes you feel happy at school?”

“What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not at school?”

“Who is someone special in your family?”

Middle School (6-8):

“What’s one thing you want me to know about you as a learner?”

“What helps you feel calm when things get stressful?”

“What’s something you’re really good at that might surprise me?”

High School (9-12):

“What are you hoping to get out of this class this year?”

“What’s one goal you have for yourself this school year?”

“What’s the best way for me to support you when you’re struggling?”

Knowing the Whole Student

Week 3-4:

“Understanding the Whole Student”

Teachers: Transition to daily well-being check-ins. Use the morning digest to understand which students might need extra attention that day—before issues escalate.

Counselors: Begin proactive outreach to students who’ve shared concerns or shown patterns in their check-ins.

Admin: Monitor school-wide trends. Are there days when the whole building feels off? Environmental factors affecting student well-being?

Elementary Focus:

Watch for students who seem overwhelmed by routines or are having trouble with transitions.

Middle School Focus:

Pay attention to social dynamics and students navigating friendship changes or academic pressure.

High School Focus:

Notice students dealing with stress about grades, college planning, or balancing school with work/activities.

The 30-Day Impact

By the end of the first month, your teachers will know more than just names—they’ll understand what makes each student tick. Your counselors will have meaningful conversation starters with every student. And you’ll have data-driven insights into your school’s emotional climate.

Elementary Results:

Students feel safe to share, fewer meltdowns, smoother transitions, and parents who see their child feels valued at school.

Middle School Results:

Reduced social drama, students who feel understood during a turbulent time, and earlier identification of students struggling with the transition to adolescence.

High School Results:

Stronger teacher-student relationships despite packed schedules, students who feel seen as individuals (not just test scores), and earlier intervention for stress and mental health concerns.

The Universal Result:

Fewer crisis interventions, stronger teacher confidence, and students who feel genuinely cared for from their very first day.
